Hardeep Singh Gill, Vice Chairman, National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) appreciated Municipal Corporation (MC) Ludhiana for the decision to implement term insurance for Safai Karamcharis in the coming time.

Vice Chairman Hardeep Singh Gill was in the city on Wednesday to conduct a review meeting regarding the grievances and working conditions of Safai Karamcharis.

While conducting the meeting at MC Zone D office in Sarabha Nagar along with MC Commissioner Ojasvi Alakar among other officials of district administration, police and civic body, Vice Chairman Hardeep Singh Gill interacted with the representatives of different employees unions and issued necessary directions for resolving their grievances.

ADC (G) Shikha Bhagat, AC (G) Payal Goyal, MC Joint Commissioner Amanpreet Singh, Joint Commissioner Tapan Bhanot, Chief MInister's Field Officer Tushita Gulati among other officials of district administration, police and civic body were present in the meeting.

Vice Chairman Hardeep Gill said that the last meeting of the commission was held in the city around three months back. During the meeting held on Wednesday, the proceedings of the last meeting were also reviewed and most of the grievances related to the salaries/provident fund etc have been resolved by the civic body.

Further, Vice Chairman Gill also directed the police department to add relevant sections of Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers Act and the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act in the FIR registered in context to the death of three workers while cleaning a septic tank in a local factory earlier this year.

Vice Chairman Gill said that the commission has given 1 month time to the police department for adding the relevant sections to the FIR, otherwise strict action would be recommended against the concerned police officials. If need be, the matter would also be raised in the Supreme Court of India.

Vice Chairman Hardeep Gill further said that working on the directions of the commission, the district authorities have also formed monitoring committees to protect the rights and safety of sanitation workers. The concerned officials have been directed to conduct regular meetings of the monitoring committees.

Further, Vice Chairman Hardeep Singh Gill directed the authorities to enroll sanitation workers on the NAMASTE Scheme Portal ( National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem) of the union government. The aim is to provide them with safety, health, and welfare benefits

Vice Chairman Hardeep Singh Gill said that the commission has been conducting regular review meetings for the welfare of Safai Karamcharis. Strict directions have been issued to the concerned officials that no laxity would be tolerated in this regard.
