Following the exposure of a shocking kidnapping-for-ransom racket operating under the pretext of overseas employment, the NGO Punjab Against Corruption has urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to intervene immediately. The organization’s president Satnam Daun and member Navneet Fazilka alleged that a nexus between travel agents and international gangs is targeting youth from Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand.
According to the NGO, victims were lured with promises of jobs in South Korea but were instead routed through Thailand and Gulf countries to Ethiopia, where they were abducted upon exiting the airport. Disturbing audio and video clips sent to families reportedly show victims being brutally beaten and tortured. The kidnappers are allegedly demanding around ₹50 lakh per person as ransom.
The alleged mastermind, identifying himself as “Khan Baba,” is said to be using WhatsApp to issue threats and demand money, warning of murder if payments are not made.
Families claim that despite informing police and Indian embassies, no concrete action has been taken so far. While some families have paid hefty sums to secure the release of their children, others remain in captivity.
The NGO has called on the state government to seek Interpol assistance, take strict action against fraudulent agents, and dismantle the entire network to prevent more youth from falling prey to the scam.
