In a move to boost sports infrastructure and youth engagement in constructive activities, a modern Box Cricket facility would be developed at Shalimar Bagh in Kapurthala city. The facility will be the first government Box Cricket ground in the city, providing youngsters with a dedicated and modern space for sports and recreational activities.

Divulging details, Deputy Commissioner Akash Bansal said that the project had already received the necessary approval, while the Municipal Corporation Kapurthala had also accorded its approval to the Public Works Department (PWD) for construction of the Box Cricket ground. The proposed Box Cricket facility would be developed over an area of around 6,000 square feet and would be completed within two months of commencement of work. He added that standard box cricket ground is a compact, fully enclosed rectangular arena featuring artificial turf, high safety nets, and integrated floodlights for fast-paced recreational play. It would have also adequate lighting, player entry and exit arrangements, drainage facilities and basic amenities.

The enclosed facility would further also ensure a safe and dedicated environment for youngsters to practice and play, while the facility would be utilized for local tournaments, coaching sessions and friendly matches.

The Deputy Commissioner said that regular participation in sports would not only promote physical fitness and discipline but also would keep them engaged in healthy and sporting activities. The new facility would provide residents, particularly young people, an additional avenue to participate in sports close to their homes.

The Deputy Commissioner said that the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, was committed to strengthening sports infrastructure and encouraging youngsters to take up sports. He said that the development of modern sporting facilities would help nurture sporting talent and contribute towards building a healthier, more disciplined and drug-free society.
