Following the orders issued by the Punjab Government’s Home Affairs Department, PPS officer Harikamapreet Singh Khakh today assumed charge as the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Malerkotla.
Prior to this appointment, Khakh was serving as Additional Inspector General (AIG), NRI Wing, Jalandhar. He was also holding the additional charge of Commandant, ISTC, Kapurthala, and Commandant, 7th Battalion Punjab Armed Police (PAP), Jalandhar.
On his arrival at the SSP office, Khakh was accorded a Guard of Honour by the Malerkotla Police. Senior police officers, including SPs, DSPs and SHOs, were present to welcome him.
After taking charge, SSP Khakh reviewed the overall law-and-order situation and crime scenario in the district. He held a detailed meeting with senior police officers and directed them to maintain professionalism, ensure prompt action on public complaints and strengthen community policing.
Addressing the police force, SSP Khakh announced a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of crime. He directed field units to intensify action against active drug smugglers, gangsters, property offenders and other criminal elements operating in the district.
Khakh said Malerkotla would not be allowed to become a safe haven for criminals. He said strict and prompt action would be taken against drug trafficking, robbery, theft, extortion and crimes against women and children. He stressed that action against offenders would be fair, impartial and based on evidence, irrespective of their influence or status.
He also directed officers to improve the quality of investigations, ensure timely submission of charge sheets in courts and provide appropriate assistance to victims.
The SSP outlined key priorities for the Malerkotla Police, including maintaining peace during festivals, gatherings and sensitive occasions; expediting investigations into serious crimes such as murder, robbery and extortion; and strengthening the anti-drug campaign by identifying drug traffickers, breaking supply chains and ensuring rehabilitation support for drug users.
He also emphasized strengthening community policing through regular interaction with residents, sarpanches and community leaders. Special attention, he said, should be given to preventing crimes against women and children, while patrolling, night checkpoints and surveillance should be strengthened to curb thefts.
The SSP further directed officers to improve road safety and reduce accidents, while making greater use of CCTV cameras, digital tools and data analytics to make policing more effective.
SSP Khakh appealed to the people of Malerkotla to cooperate with the police in maintaining law and order and to report any illegal activity without hesitation. He said cooperation between the police and the public was essential to making Malerkotla a safer district.
He assured residents that every complaint received by phone, email or in person would be acknowledged and acted upon promptly. A dedicated mechanism would also be put in place to monitor the disposal of complaints and ensure accountability.
