A meeting of the General Council of the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, was held at the Ministry’s office in New Delhi. Sukhwinder Singh Bindra, Member (NISD) and Special Member/Invitee (NCCDOR), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, and former State Chairman, Punjab Youth Development Board, presided over the meeting.
Shri Sudhansh Pant, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment; Debolina Thakur, IAS; Monali P. Dhakate, IAS; Gaurav Rajwant, IAS; and senior officials of the Ministry were also present at the meeting.
On the occasion, chief speaker Ajit Tewatia from Haryana stated that the Ministry works towards the social, economic and educational advancement of weaker, disadvantaged and backward sections of society. It also supports awareness campaigns related to drug de-addiction and prevention, rehabilitation centres and voluntary organisations. The Ministry further implements laws and policies concerning social justice and monitors their effective implementation.
Speaking on the occasion, Sukhwinder Singh Bindra said that the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, will sign Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with colleges across the country, including Punjab. The initiative aims to provide greater opportunities for education, skill development and employment to young people, particularly students belonging to weaker, disadvantaged and backward sections of society.
He further informed that the Ministry has already entered into important MoUs with Desh Bhagat University (DBU) and Punjabi University, Patiala. He added that similar MoUs will also be signed with other leading universities and colleges in Punjab.
Sukhwinder Singh Bindra further said that his department has consistently been working to keep young people away from drugs. He stated that his department, in collaboration with Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar, will continue working for the welfare and development of youth and make every possible effort to protect them from drug abuse.
Bindra highlighted the important role of youth empowerment and awareness programmes in preventing drug abuse. He said that he and his department remain committed to the welfare of Punjab and its youth and will continue taking necessary steps to safeguard the younger generation from drugs.
He also emphasised the importance of sports in keeping young people away from drugs. He said that sports kits would be distributed in the coming period to encourage youth to stay away from drugs and participate in sports. Further efforts will also be made to channel the energy of young people in a positive and constructive direction.
In conclusion, Bindra expressed his gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Cabinet Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar for their visionary approach and their efforts towards empowering the youth.
