The sequential hunger strike launched by the Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Memorial Trust at the martyr’s birthplace in Naughera entered its fifth day on Sunday. The soul of Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar, who kissed the gallows for the country’s freedom during the freedom struggle, kept waiting with bated breath for a glimpse of Supreme Court convict Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP’s Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia.
On Friday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had come to Ludhiana to inaugurate a project. Meanwhile, Kejriwal was addressing a late-night gathering at the ‘Ek Sham Shiv Ke Naam’ stage at Daresi Ground, barely a few hundred metres from the martyr’s birthplace, to consolidate Hindu votes by enumerating the achievements of the government. Despite being present so close to the birthplace of the martyr, Kejriwal did not consider it appropriate to visit the site.
These allegations were levelled by the martyr’s descendants, Ashok Thapar and Tribhuvan Thapar, who are sitting on the sequential hunger strike at the birthplace for the fourth day, while addressing representatives of social organisations present there. The Thapars said that after inaugurating a project in Ludhiana on Friday, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann repeatedly invoked the name of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh in a public meeting. However, he completely forgot to mention Sukhdev Thapar, the comrade of Bhagat Singh who was born on the soil of Ludhiana. Whether the state government’s indifferent attitude towards Shaheed Sukhdev is a political game or there is some other hidden agenda behind it remains to be seen.
Those present on the occasion included Ashish Boni, Pali Sahajpal, Pramod Thapar, Rakesh Budhiraja, Puneet Kumar, Harry Virdi, Advocate Amit Tandon, Pargat Singh, Harish Grover, Lalit Mehra, Tushar Dhiman, Akash Tiwari, Lovepreet Singh, Pankaj Kumar, Vicky, Sachin Solanki from Ahmedabad, Bhargav Thakur, Kukranjan Singh, Rajesh Rana, Jayant Puri, Bhupender Pal Singh and Shubham Guddu Singh.
