At Isru Shaheedi Conference, Randhawa says party cannot come to power by ignoring its workers

Randhawa makes serious allegations against the Mann government and the Centre of patronising gangsters

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, while addressing the Isru Shaheedi Conference in Ludhiana today, claimed that the Congress would form the government in Punjab in the 2027 Assembly elections and, on the strength of a strong Congress foundation in Punjab, Rahul Gandhi would be made the Prime Minister of the country in 2029. “It is a question of Punjab’s turban, and we will not allow Punjab’s honour to be brought to disgrace. The dignity of Congress workers and the honour of Punjab are paramount,” he said.

Randhawa said that no party can come to power by ignoring its workers. “We have nurtured the Congress with our blood and sweat. If the Congress is standing strong in the state today, it is because of the contribution of every worker, not any one individual.” He said that as a member of the Congress Working Committee, he, along with former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, has the responsibility of strengthening the Congress in Punjab. He said Congress workers are looking towards the party with hope and that the Congress would protect Punjab’s interests while politically taking on the BJP government at the Centre.

Randhawa said that the previous Congress government’s 111-day tenure was equivalent to 11 years of work. “We are Congressmen, and we do not need anyone’s certificate to prove that we are Congressmen. Congress is in our blood. Many presidents and positions come and go, but the Congress remains standing,” he said.

Addressing the alleged factionalism within the Congress, Randhawa sent a clear message that strengthening the party and winning the elections must come first. He said that there had been major groups and differences in the Congress in the past as well, but the party had always faced electoral challenges unitedly. “Factionalism and divisions can be dealt with later; first, we have to ensure the Congress wins,” he said.

Randhawa also warned the Bhagwant Singh Mann government against what he described as attempts to suppress Congress workers. He said that the politics of intimidating and threatening Congress workers could not continue for long. He also advised police officials to take impartial action in accordance with the law and said that those working under political pressure could face accountability in the future. He said, “Talk alone does not get the job done,” and that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann should answer to the people on the basis of his government’s performance.

Randhawa also made serious allegations against the Bhagwant Mann government and the Central government regarding law and order and gangster activities in Punjab. He said that serious questions were being raised over the activities of gangsters and the use of mobile phones in prisons in Punjab as well as in the BJP-ruled states of Rajasthan, Assam, Gujarat and Haryana. He claimed that once the Congress forms the government, strict action will be taken against gangsterism and criminals will be dealt with firmly.
