BJP leader Praveen Bansal has written to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, demanding that the law passed by the Legislative Assembly on July 14, 2025—aimed to prevent acts of sacrilege—be expanded to include the desecration of Sanatan Dharma scriptures and the forms of deities. Bansal stated that in Sanatan Dharma, after the pran-prathistha of deities, they are worshipped as the living embodiment of God. Similarly, the sacred flame (Jyoti) is revered as a manifestation of the deity itself. The worship of the Tulsi and Peepal plants is also a cherished tradition of Sanatan Dharma. The Tilak, Janeu (sacred thread), and Shikha (tuft of hair), all of which hold immense significance. Any form of tampering, damage, or use of derogatory language regarding these should be classified as sacrilege. He urged the government to enact legislation to prevent the desecration of all religious scriptures and the forms of deities. He suggested that the law should not be limited merely to scriptures but should also encompass the great figures, customs, and sacred traditions of all religions. Bansal remarked that the government's silence regarding open threats issued on social media against Hindu deities, society, and leaders is condemnable; the government needs to be sensitive to these threats. Praveen Bansal demanded that anyone found guilty of sacrilege be punished severely, regardless of their caste or religion. Supporting a one-day symbolic hunger strike organized by the Shri Hindu Nyay Peeth on August 9—which calls for amendments to the sacrilege law—Bansal appealed to all followers of Sanatan Dharma to participate in the protest.
