Commission Seeks Action-Taken Report from Punjab Chief Secretary and DGP
Sunil Jakhar Demands Impartial Probe and Protection for Victim’s Family
Chandigarh, October 23, 2026: The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the murder of Ajay Kumar in Abohar and issued a notice to the Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP), seeking a report on the action taken in the case.
The Commission has called for an impartial investigation, protection for the victim’s family and justice in accordance with the law. It has also recommended that the probe be supervised by a senior police officer not directly involved in the investigation.
In its communication, the Commission referred to a shooting incident that took place in Sant Nagar, Abohar, on September 27, 2026, in which Ajay Kumar died while undergoing treatment. According to the letter, the deceased belonged to the sanitation workers’ community, and his father is also employed as a sanitation worker.
The Commission has called for a thorough examination of all available evidence, including CCTV footage, forensic evidence, call records and the deceased’s statement. It has also asked the authorities to consider providing protection to the victim’s family and witnesses, along with appropriate compensation and legal assistance.
Meanwhile, protests are continuing in Abohar, with demonstrators demanding immediate action and an impartial investigation. Protesters have stated that the post-mortem examination and cremation will not take place until the police take action in the case.
Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar has reached Chandigarh along with the victim’s family and has been staging a sit-in protest outside the Punjab Legislative Assembly for the past two days. A similar protest is also underway in Abohar.
Jakhar has urged the Punjab government to take the Commission’s recommendations seriously and provide an update on the progress of the investigation. He stressed that the victim’s family must receive justice and that any decision regarding the accused should be based on evidence and taken strictly in accordance with the law.
The case has drawn comparisons with the ongoing demand for justice in the death of Parvinder Singh Jhota, an anti-drug activist who died in Mansa, with protesters seeking accountability and action from the authorities.
