Policy of diverting sugarcane towards ethanol has burdened the common man with inflation; Centre must answer

Chandigarh, August 20, 2026:

Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa launched a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi-led Central Government over the rising prices of sugar. He said that the people of the country are bearing the brunt of the Centre’s flawed policies. If diverting sugarcane on a large scale towards ethanol production has affected sugar availability and sugar prices have increased by nearly ₹20 per kg in just 17 days, then the Central Government must give a clear explanation.

Randhawa said that the government had projected ethanol-blended petrol as a major solution for saving foreign exchange, but the situation today is such that sugar imports are being discussed. He said that if one policy causes another essential commodity to become more expensive, it indicates a serious lapse in policymaking.

Randhawa demanded that the Central Government clarify the impact of its ethanol policy on sugar production, the actual status of current sugar stocks, and the concrete steps it is taking to control prices. The common household is already struggling with rising prices of cooking gas, edible oil, pulses and other essential commodities. With sugar, a daily-use item, also becoming more expensive, household budgets will be further affected. Forcing people to bear the burden of inflation is not appropriate for any responsible government.
