Trust unhappy over neglect of martyr Sukhdev Thapar’s birthplace, to begin relay hunger strike from August 12**

Govt honours martyr Bhagat Singh but treats martyr Sukhdev Thapar like a stepmother — Ashok Thapar

The Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Memorial Trust has announced a relay hunger strike from August 12 in protest against the continuous neglect of martyr Sukhdev Thapar’s birthplace at Naughara. In a written statement issued to the press, trust national president and descendant of the martyr, Ashok Thapar, levelled serious charges against the governments and the district administration.

Ashok Thapar said the Punjab government was completely indifferent towards the birthplace of martyr Sukhdev Thapar. AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann claim martyr Bhagat Singh as their ideal and honour him, yet the government and district administration are not showing seriousness even about constructing an approximately 200-metre road leading to the birthplace of Sukhdev Thapar, who kissed the noose along with Bhagat Singh.

He said the long-pending demand to rename Ludhiana railway station after martyr Sukhdev Thapar had also remained pending, with the state government taking no concrete action on the matter. Due to this, the trust had been forced to adopt the path of hunger strike.

Tribhuvan Thapar alleged that martyr Sukhdev Thapar was being treated like a stepmother perhaps because he was a Hindu martyr. He demanded that the government immediately construct the road to the martyr’s birthplace and rename Ludhiana railway station after Shahid Sukhdev Thapar. Such a step, he said, would prove significant in truly honouring the martyr’s contribution and sacrifice.
