In a remarkable example of compassion, courage and coordinated healthcare, the Liver Transplant Team at DMC&H, Ludhiana, successfully performed a cadaveric liver transplant in the early hours of October 4, 2026. The liver was donated by the family of Madhu Sharma, who was declared brain dead at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, following a severe subarachnoid haemorrhage with intraventricular haemorrhage. In a courageous decision during a time of profound grief, her family, including her son serving in the Indian Army, consented to organ donation, thereby giving hope to patients suffering from end-stage organ failure.
Following the brain-death declaration and consent, the organ donation process was coordinated through SOTTO Punjab. DMC&H had a suitable recipient from Ahmedgarh, who had been suffering from chronic liver disease and liver failure for several years and had no suitable living donor within his family. A DMC&H retrieval team travelled to Mohali, where the liver was retrieved in coordination with the Fortis Hospital team. Both kidneys were also retrieved and allocated to suitable recipients at other hospitals in Mohali. The donated liver was subsequently transported to DMC&H through a green corridor and successfully transplanted within the required time window.
The transplant team was led by Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon, DMC&H, with Dr. Sangam Papneja, Associate Consultant, Liver Transplant, as part of the surgical team. Dr. P. L. Gautam, Head of Critical Care and Liver Transplant Anaesthesia, and his team managed the anaesthesia and critical-care requirements. The transplant coordinators, nursing staff, technicians, operating-room personnel, ambulance and transport teams, along with various supporting departments, played a vital role in ensuring the successful completion of the time-sensitive procedure.
Sh. Bipin Gupta, Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society, said that the family’s decision to donate organs in a moment of immense personal loss was an extraordinary act of humanity. He said that organ donation can transform grief into hope and give several critically ill patients a second chance at life, while also appreciating the coordinated efforts of all hospitals and teams involved.
Dr. G. S. Wander, Principal, DMC&H, congratulated the Liver Transplant Team and all supporting departments for their coordinated efforts. He said that the successful cadaveric transplant reflects DMC&H’s commitment to providing advanced transplant care and its growing expertise in managing complex liver transplants involving both living and deceased donors.
The DMC&H Liver Transplant Team appealed to the public to understand that organ donation can transform tragedy into hope. One donor can potentially give several patients a second chance at life, and families who come forward for donation play an invaluable role in saving lives.
