Challan Issued for Unhygienic Conditions; Three Samples Collected for Testing

Under the directions of Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, Dr. Ramandeep Kaur, the Food Safety Department, as part of its ongoing campaign against activities that compromise public health, conducted a raid today at a house in New Gurnam Nagar, Jassian Road, Ludhiana, based on confidential information.
During the operation, approximately 300 kg of different varieties of sweets were found. According to the information received by the department, the concerned person was allegedly purchasing “used sugar syrup” (sugar syrup that had already been used) from various sweet shops and reusing it to prepare different varieties of sweets.
The practice of reusing “used sugar syrup” for preparing sweets is a matter of serious concern from the perspective of food safety, hygiene and potential contamination. Food Business Operators are required to maintain prescribed hygiene and sanitation standards during the preparation, storage and handling of food products.
Taking immediate action, the Food Safety Team collected three samples from the premises for laboratory testing, while approximately 300 kg of sweets were seized and destroyed as per the prescribed food safety procedure, to prevent the sweets from reaching consumers. A challan was also issued on the spot for unhygienic conditions.
Dr. Ashish Chawla, District Health Officer, Ludhiana, stated that providing safe and hygienic food to the public is a top priority of the department. He said that strict action would be taken, as per applicable rules and regulations, against those compromising the quality and safety of food products.
He further stated that all Food Business Operators (FBOs) must ensure compliance with hygiene, sanitation, safe food-handling practices and other applicable food safety standards during the preparation and sale of food products.
The Health Department has appealed to sweet manufacturers, sellers and other Food Business Operators to strictly comply with the food safety, hygiene and sanitation standards prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and ensure the supply of safe and quality food in accordance with applicable FSSAI regulations.
The department has also appealed to the public to purchase sweets and other food products only from reliable, hygienic and FSSAI-licensed/registered food business establishments.
