Approximately 3,000 Litres of Desi Cow Ghee Seized; Samples Sent for Laboratory Analysis

As part of its ongoing special drive to ensure the availability of safe and quality food for consumers, the Food Safety Department, Ludhiana, today conducted a raid at a godown located in Deep Nagar, Ludhiana, and seized approximately 3,000 litres of desi cow ghee. During the operation, a large quantity of ghee was recovered, and representative samples were collected as per the prescribed procedure and sent to a government-notified laboratory for analysis.

Sharing details of the operation, Dr. Ashish Chawla, District Health Officer (Food Safety), Ludhiana, stated that the preliminary investigation revealed that the ghee had reportedly been sourced from Gujarat. He further informed that the product was procured at an approximate price of ₹400 per litre  while the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) printed on the packaging was ₹700 per litre. The department is verifying the purchase invoices, transportation documents, product labelling, and other relevant records as part of the ongoing investigation.

Dr. Chawla further stated that, under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the guidelines of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), every Food Business Operator (FBO) is required to possess a valid FSSAI licence or registration, maintain proper hygiene, ensure accurate labelling, preserve statutory records, and market food products that comply with the prescribed food safety standards. He emphasized that the quality and safety of any food product can only be conclusively determined after laboratory analysis. Accordingly, the samples collected during the raid have been sent for testing, and any further action, if required, will be taken strictly on the basis of the laboratory report and in accordance with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Dr. Chawla reiterated that the Food Safety Department will continue its enforcement drive against food business operators found violating food safety regulations or dealing in non-compliant food products. He appealed to consumers to purchase food items only from FSSAI-licensed establishments, carefully verify product labels and the FSSAI licence number before making a purchase, and promptly report any suspected food safety violations to the Food Safety Department for appropriate action.
