Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, hosted the release ceremony of ‘‘THE UNDERDOG’ ’, an inspiring new book authored by Canada-based veterinarian Dr. Hakam Bhullar. The event drew faculty members, veterinary professionals, students and well-wishers who gathered to celebrate Dr. Bhullar’s remarkable journey.
In his book, Dr. Bhullar narrates the challenges he faced as an immigrant veterinarian in Canada, detailing episodes of injustice, professional obstacles and racial discrimination. Despite these hardships, he rose to prominence through determination, integrity and commitment to animal welfare. ‘THE UNDERDOG ’ not only captures his personal struggles but also sheds light on the systemic hurdles faced by many immigrants abroad.
S. Gurmeet Singh Khuddian, Cabinet Minister, Punjab for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Development., who presided over the function, lauded Dr. Bhullar for documenting a powerful story of resilience. The minister said the book would inspire youth to confront challenges with courage and reminded the audience that stories like Dr. Bhullar’s, strengthen the global Punjabi identity.
Dr JPS Gill, Vice-Chancellor addressed the gathering, praising Dr. Bhullar as an exemplary alumnus who has upheld the values of the university throughout his career. Dr Gill highlighted that the book would motivate veterinary students to broaden their horizons and pursue excellence with honesty and dedication.
Dr RS Aulakh, Director Students' Welfare shared the entire professional journey of Dr Bhullar. He underlined the book as a professional courage against injustice.
Expressing gratitude, Dr. Bhullar said, returning to his alma mater for the book launch was deeply emotional. “This book is not just my story; it speaks for everyone who fights back against unfairness,” he said, encouraging students to stay resilient and principled.
Dr. Bhullar expressed gratitude to the institute for shaping his professional foundation.
