Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab’s Abohar constituency in-charge Dr Suhani Doda strongly condemned the insulting and indecent remarks made against her by senior BJP leader and former minister Surjit Kumar Jyani. Dr Doda said that the BJP leader’s statement had not only insulted her but the entire women’s community.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday along with state president of the Women’s Wing and MLA Dr Amandeep Kaur, Dr Suhani Doda said that on September 20, at a BJP stage in Abohar, Surjit Jyani, while addressing BJP state president Sunil Jakhar, used derogatory language against her and referred to her as being “not even equal to a shoe under his foot.”
Dr Suhani Doda questioned the mindset of BJP leaders and said that on the one hand, the BJP government at the Centre raises big slogans of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ and talks about Hinduism and the worship of goddesses, while on the other hand, its senior leaders compare an educated woman, a doctor, who is serving people, to a footwear. She said this exposes the BJP’s hypocrisy and its hateful mindset towards women.
Dr Suhani Doda said that the most shocking and unfortunate part was that when this shameful incident took place, BJP’s former Punjab president Sunil Jakhar, along with senior BJP women leaders Mona Jaiswal (state vice-president), Vandana Sangwal, Vijaylaxmi Bhadu and Abohar Mayor Pooja Wadhwa, were present on the stage.
She questioned why these BJP women leaders, who claim to represent women, remained silent at the time. Did they agree with Surjit Jyani’s poor mindset? If not, why had they not condemned his statement so far?
Meanwhile, MLA Dr Amandeep Kaur said that this was not the first incident of BJP leaders insulting women. Earlier too, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut and a BJP leader had used extremely indecent language about women and our children (Gen-Z). BJP leaders touch women’s feet while seeking votes, but after winning, they consider women no more than a shoe under their feet.
Speaking about the history of the old Akali-BJP alliance, Dr Amandeep Kaur also targeted Harsimrat Kaur Badal. She said that the Akali Dal and BJP had caused great harm to Punjab and our religious places. Before pointing fingers at others, Harsimrat Badal should clarify her stand on the plight of woman in a SGPC sarai and on the issue of the woman from Bahrain. The Aam Aadmi Party has always respected women, as demonstrated by the fact that the party gave tickets to 12 women, 11 of whom won, reached the Vidhan Sabha and some became Cabinet Ministers.
Dr Amandeep Kaur said that Dr Suhani Doda had filed a complaint with the Women’s Commission regarding the matter, following which the Commission has taken action and issued a notice to the BJP leader to appear before it.
Dr Amandeep Kaur appealed to all the mothers, sisters and daughters of Punjab to give a strong response to this anti-women mindset of BJP leaders. She said that AAP’s force of more than 2.5 lakh women workers stands firmly with Dr Suhani Doda. Until Surjit Jyani and the BJP leaders tender an unconditional apology for the insulting statement, the Aam Aadmi Party’s Women’s Wing will not stay silent.
