450 Degrees Conferred at the Annual Convocation of SCD Government College, Ludhiana; Professor (Dr.) Jatinder Pal Singh Gill (VC, GADVASU) and alumnus of the College graces the Occasion
SCD Government College, Ludhiana, organised its Annual Convocation today at the Sahir Auditorium, with Prof. Dr. Jatinder Pal Singh Gill, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, as the Chief Guest. The programme commenced with college Shabad Gayan and a formal welcome of the Chief Guest and the dignitaries. Professor (Dr.) Jatinder Pal Singh Gill, an alumnus of this college from 1982 batch, is an eminent academician and administrator with over 37 years of experience in academia, research and administration, and has served in several important positions at GADVASU Ludhiana, including Director of Research and Director, School of Public Health and Zoonoses. He has contributed extensively to national and international scientific and policy initiatives and has led numerous research projects, besides authoring more than 250 scientific publications.
Principal Professor (Dr.) Gursharn Jit Singh Sandhu presented the Annual Report, highlighting the college’s academic, infrastructural, cultural and sporting achievements. Founded in 1920, SCD Government College has grown into a prestigious institution under Panjab University, offering 16 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to more than 5,000 students. He highlighted the development of modern facilities, including state-of-the-art science laboratories, a fully equipped gymnasium, an upgraded library and smart classrooms. Dr. Sandhu foregrounded the college’s rich legacy of alumni: Mr. N.N. Vohra (former Governor of Jammu & Kashmir), General T.N. Raina, Major General Himmat Singh Gill, M.S. Gill (former Member of Parliament and former Chief Election Commissioner), Padma Shri Keki N. Daruwala (IPS and famous English poet), Colonel Avtar Singh Cheema (Arjuna Awardee and Padma Shri Awardee), Mr. Harkrishan Lal (famous painter), Mr. Joginder Singh (former Director, CBI), Mr. Mohan Sehgal (film director and producer), Mr. Yashpal Sharma (famous cricketer), and Arjuna Awardee sportspersons- Mr. Sajjan Singh Cheema, Mr. Manmohan Singh, and Mr. Sukhpal Singh, Mr. Sanjeev Arora (Cabinet Minister, Govt. of Punjab) and Mr. Kulwant Singh Siddhu (MLA, Atam Nagar, Ludhiana). He also highlighted the college’s academic achievements, with students securing top positions in Panjab University in subjects including Hindi, Chemistry, English and Physics. Several students also qualified competitive examinations such as the UGC-NET. In extracurricular activities, the college won the Overall Trophy at the Zonal Youth Festival, while students excelled in basketball, wrestling, athletics, volleyball and hockey at university, national and international levels. The contribution of NSS, NCC, Youth Services, Red Cross Society, Red Ribbon Club, Women Development Council, Legal Literacy Cell and Eco Club was also acknowledged.
After the presentation of annual report, the Chief Guest formally declared the Convocation open, following which degrees were conferred upon the first-division holders. A total of 450 degrees were awarded, comprising 245 postgraduate and 205 undergraduate degrees. The postgraduate degrees covered MSc Chemistry, Physics, IT and Mathematics; MCom General and Business Innovation; and MA Economics, English, Hindi, Geography and Punjabi. Undergraduate degrees were awarded in BA Morning, BA Evening, BCom, BSc, BBA and BCA. On this occasion, the college magazine, The Sutlej, for the session 2025-26 was also unveiled.
Delivering the Convocation Address, Prof. Dr. Gill expressed his pride and gratitude at being part of the ceremony and recalled his own association with the college as an alumnus with fondness and nostalgia. He congratulated the Principal, faculty and non-teaching staff for the meticulous organisation of the event. Addressing the graduating students, he described the Convocation as the culmination of years of hard work and dedication and urged them to view it as the beginning of a new chapter. He encouraged them to remain committed to lifelong learning, read books and biographies of inspiring personalities such as Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and use mobile phones and social media judiciously. Dr. Gill further encouraged students to explore entrepreneurship, start-ups, innovation, higher education and research opportunities, including those available abroad. He urged them to face challenges with courage, dream big and remain innovative. Emphasising social responsibility, he called upon students to stay away from drugs, maintain positive thinking and become responsible citizens.
The Chief Guest also inaugurated the new building of the Department of Botany, constructed under Higher Education scheme of Govt. of Punjab, strengthening the academic infrastructure of the college. Principals of various colleges, former principals and faculty members of the college and other distinguished guests were also present and honoured on the occasion.
The Convocation was formally declared closed, followed by a vote of thanks by College Registrar Prof. Devina Ghai, who expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest, dignitaries, faculty, staff and students for making the occasion a success. The event was made successful by the untiring efforts of the college examination branch: Dr. Sondeep, Dr. Aarsi Sandhu, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Prof. Manpreet Kaur, Dr. Samriti Khullar, Prof. Jyoti, Ms. Snehpreet and Mr. Gurdeep Singh. The stage was handled by Prof. Geetanjali Pabreja. The event closed with the National anthem.
