DPIIT organizes Stakeholder Consultation to boost growth of Hand and Power Tools Sector

India has a strong opportunity to expand its footprint in the global hand and power tools market, and DPIIT is committed to working closely with industry to address on-ground challenges, strengthen capabilities, scale up manufacturing, and drive export growth in the sector: Shri Sumeet Kumar Jarangal

In view of the importance of the Hand and Power Tools sectors in supporting key industries such as automotive, construction, and infrastructure, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, organised a stakeholder consultation with manufacturers of Hand and Power Tools on 10th June, 2026 in Ludhiana. The meeting, chaired by Shri Sumeet Kumar Jarangal, Joint Secretary, DPIIT, saw participation from Industry Associations, Industry Members and manufacturers, among others. The Consultation focused on exploring dedicated policy measures to support sectoral growth and enhance competitiveness.

Emphasising on the criticality of the sector, Shri Jarangal noted that despite a large global trade, valued at about US$ 34 billion for hand tools and US$ 63 billion for power tools, export share of India remains low, indicating significant scope to scale up manufacturing and expand its global footprint. He further stated that several measures are being undertaken to enhance product quality and strengthen domestic manufacturing for the hand and power tools sector including the introduction of the Quality Control Order (QCO) on Hand Tools which is to be implemented from 1st October 2026. Further, DPIIT is also in the process of notifying a QCO on Safety of Hand-held Motor-Operated Electric Tools.

Industry stakeholders welcomed the efforts of the Government to promote the growth of the Hand and Power Tools industry and highlighted key areas requiring further policy support. They emphasized the need for measures such as capital subsidies for technology upgradation and capacity expansion, development of dedicated industrial clusters with adequate land and infrastructure, and interest subvention schemes to improve access to affordable finance. Stakeholders also underscored the importance of providing concessional import duties on some power tool components for a limited period to facilitate domestic value addition, attract investments, and strengthen the local supply chain ecosystem.

In conclusion, the Hand and Power Tools sector is a key driver for strengthening the manufacturing ecosystem of India and expanding its global trade presence. The Stakeholder Consultation highlighted the importance of a strong Government-Industry collaboration to address challenges of the concerned sector and unlock growth potential. With sustained efforts, the sector is poised to enhance competitiveness, boost exports, generate employment, and contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
