NEW DELHI:

While the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government is taking the fight against drugs to its conclusion by filing a chargesheet against powerful Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia, the BJP is seeking to join hands with the very party he belongs to, raising serious questions about its intentions towards Punjab. Reacting sharply to the BJP’s reported political overtures, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal pointed out the BJP is trying to undermine Punjab’s fight against drugs and warned that Punjabis would never allow the state to be pushed back into the drug crisis.

Taking to X, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal stated, “Someone who sold drugs worth ₹736 crore in Punjab and deposited that money in his bank accounts is now the person with whom Amit Shah is preparing to form an alliance to push Punjab back into the drug crisis. Will drugs now be brought through Gujarat and sold in Punjab? The people of Punjab will never allow this.”

Meanwhile, senior AAP leader and Punjab Prabhari Manish Sisodia stated, “I once again congratulate Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for his courage and determination. The chargesheet filed by the Punjab Police against Bikram Singh Majithia today details how he earned ₹736 crore by selling drugs and deposited the money in bank accounts of his companies. After this chargesheet, Majithia will rot in jail for the rest of his life.”

The AAP Punjab Prabhari pointed out, “The entire Punjab knows that Chitta entered the state during the ten years of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal)-BJP government from 2007 to 2017. Bikram Singh Majithia was so powerful that nobody had the courage to speak against him. Bhagwant Singh Mann sent the same Bikram Singh Majithia to jail, and today a chargesheet has been filed against him in court.”

“Bhagwant Singh Mann has significantly reduced the drugs coming into Punjab from Pakistan. Most of the drugs now come from Gujarat. That is why Amit Shah and Bikram Singh Majithia have come together. Their attempt is to save this drug network at any cost. Amit Shah and Bikram Singh Majithia have joined hands to stop the war against drugs that Bhagwant Singh Mann has been waging, putting his own life on the line,” he added.

AAP National Media In-charge Anurag Dhanda said the filing of the chargesheet was significant because successive governments had failed to take comparable action against Bikram Singh Majithia despite years of public debate surrounding the drug crisis. “Political parties have repeatedly promised to eliminate drugs, including the BJP, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Congress. But the real test is whether governments act against powerful people. CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government arrested Bikram Singh Majithia, and the Punjab Police has now filed a 40,000-page chargesheet. This action will be remembered in Punjab’s political history because it takes the investigation against a powerful leader to the stage of a detailed chargesheet,” he said.

Anurag Dhanda said, “Bikram Singh Majithia is no unfamiliar name in Punjab. The allegations and controversies surrounding him and the drug trade have been discussed publicly for years. Questions have been raised about international drug traffickers visiting locations associated with him, and allegations involving ₹6,000 crore in drug money have also been part of public discourse. The chargesheet filed now details a ₹736 crore drug money trail and the alleged movement of money through companies linked to Bikram Singh Majithia. It sets out how the money was allegedly invested, how company assets grew and how the financial transactions took place. The evidence must now be examined through the judicial process.”

Anurag Dhanda, “Punjab has had Congress governments, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal)-BJP alliance governed the state from 2007 to 2017, and the BJP has been in power at the Centre under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Yet, for years, no government took action of this scale against Bikram Singh Majithia. CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government arrested him, and the Punjab Police has now filed a 40,000-page chargesheet. This shows the importance of taking an investigation through to the court rather than limiting the fight against drugs to political statements.”

Anurag Dhanda stated, “The chargesheet lays out the ₹736 crore drug money trail, including how money allegedly generated through drugs was channeled into companies, how the assets of those companies grew and how the financial transactions took place. The details of how the money was allegedly earned and invested are now before the court. The evidence must be tested through the judicial process, and those found guilty must face the consequences.”

Anurag Dhanda added, “Under previous governments, cases were often not registered. Even when cases were registered, investigations did not always reach the stage of a chargesheet. CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government has ensured that the investigation against Bikram Singh Majithia has reached this stage. How can you eliminate the drug trade without going after the big fish? This action demonstrates the political will to take on influential figures and pursue accountability.”

Questioning the BJP’s claims of tackling gangsters and drugs, Anurag Dhanda also referred to the presence of a high-profile gangster in a Gujarat jail. “Amit Shah speaks about eliminating gangsters and drugs, but the BJP must answer questions about its own approach. The people of Punjab need action against drug networks, regardless of how powerful their alleged operators may be. CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has taken action against Bikram Singh Majithia and ensured that the investigation reached the chargesheet stage. This is the kind of political will required to dismantle the drug trade,” he said.

Anurag Dhanda affirmed, ““Punjab’s youth and families have paid a heavy price for drugs. The fight cannot end with arrests or political statements. The financial trail must be investigated, the evidence must be presented before the court, and those found guilty must face the consequences. The chargesheet filed against Bikram Singh Majithia is an important step in that process.”
