_Dr. Inderjeet Singh Dhingra Demands Acupuncture-Based De-addiction Pilot Project at Civil Hospital Ludhiana_
Drugs have ruined the youth of Punjab. Today, even young people and children have become addicted to various types of drugs. The situation was bad before too, but now cases of *impotency, infertility and divorce* have increased alarmingly.
The previous government did nothing serious in this direction. People now have hopes from the current government, especially because other drugs are also playing a big role along with *"Chitta"*.
*Dr. Kotnis, Project Director of TI Ludhiana, Kotnis Acupuncture Hospital NGO and Health Education Center, and Secretary of Indian Acupuncture Science and Medical Association, Dr. Inderjeet Singh Dhingra* said that it is not just today's youth who are affected.
"Even after the 1971 war, when Pakistan was defeated, they realized it was not easy to defeat India’s soldiers. So, to destroy the youth of the border state, drugs were used as a weapon," he said.
After the 1971 war, when peace returned, prosperity came to Punjab — curd, lassi, milk and grains were in abundance. That’s when young people started getting into the habit of taking drugs. Drugs from outside started entering the state. The black snake of drugs spread its hood and started consuming the youth.
Dr. Dhingra further said that with the *use of a single syringe, cases of HIV-AIDS have started rising*, which has increased the government’s worries.
*Rise in Addiction and HIV-AIDS Cases*
Government data shows that *8 lakh 74 thousand people* have records in drug de-addiction centers and private de-addiction centers. *2.62 lakh people* are currently undergoing treatment. *6.12 lakh people* are getting treatment at private de-addiction centers. The real number is said to be even higher.
"The actual number of drug users is much higher than this. Now even girls are falling victim to this. Cases are also coming to light in schools where children are getting addicted to new forms of intoxicants," Dr. Dhingra added.
Due to the use of synthetic drugs as an alternative to opium, youth got attracted and started injecting more drugs. To stop needle sharing, the government started OST and Antara centers, but these centers did not get much help and *"Chitta" became the alternative*.
In the last 3 months, *15 cases of HIV-AIDS* have come to light during investigation in Ludhiana alone.
*Rules Will Have to be Changed*
Project Director *Dr. Dhingra* and General Secretary *Iqbal Singh Gill* said that the government will have to change the rules to save the state from drugs and to save the youth from being ruined.
"They said that if there is a tax of 2 liquor bottles or one excise tax on 5 grams of opium or poppy husk, then this act would apply, whereas their addiction is considered equal. In such a situation, the government will have to bring alternative treatments," he stated.

*SOME FACTS ABOUT DRUGS*
- Synthetic drugs cause mental and physical harm, whereas opium and poppy husk in limited quantities do not cause that much harm.
- The tendency to commit crimes increases among synthetic drug users. This is why cases of rape, murder, robbery, theft and snatching have increased in Punjab.
- Divorce and road accidents have increased due to the consumption of synthetic drugs and alcohol.
- Synthetic drug users die in their youth itself, while life expectancy of opium/poppy husk users is longer.
- The government will get financial benefit and police burden will reduce if alternatives are provided.
- *A quota for opium and poppy husk should be fixed for addicts under medical supervision.*

*KEY DEMAND*
*Dr. Inderjeet Singh Dhingra has written a letter to the Government of Punjab requesting to start a PILOT PROJECT at Civil Hospital Ludhiana De-addiction Center.*
The proposal is to *include Acupuncture treatment for detoxification* for the youth.
"Based on my 50 years of experience, the traditional system of Acupuncture is more effective than modern medicine alone for de-addiction, pain management, and rehabilitation. Acupuncture is drug-free, safe, and has been successfully used in 139 countries," Dr. Dhingra said.
