Mayor Principal Inderjit Kaur reviewed the progress under the World Bank and AIIB funded Canal Based Water Supply project during a meeting held at MC Zone D office in Sarabha Nagar on Friday. 

In a major development for the city, the project has achieved 22 percent physical progress just within first 11 months after it commenced on February 25, 2025.

Mayor Inderjit Kaur directed the officials to further expedite the works and complete the project within stipulated time period.

Manish Malik, Senior Manager Paramjit Singh among other officials of MC's B&R branch, O&M cell and Ludhiana Urban Water and Wastewater Management Limted were present in the meeting. 

For ensuring safety of the residents, Mayor Inderjit Kaur directed the officials to repair the roads, which have been dug up to install water supply lines under the project, at the earliest.  

Mayor stated that the concerned officials have been directed to ensure that those roads should be made motorable within 20 days and patch work should be conducted as soon as the weather conditions become favourable. In future too, it should be ensured that the dug up roads should be repaired at the earliest so that residents should not face any trouble.

Mayor also reviewed the ongoing works to establish overhead water reservoirs in different parts of the city and a world class water treatment plant (WTP) in  village Bilga (near Sahnewal). Necessary directions were issued to expedite works.

The canal based water supply project - A flagship initiative of the Government of Punjab is being implemented by the Municipal Corporation Ludhiana (MCL) with technical support from the Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC). It is jointly financed by the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). The first phase of the project has a budget of Rs 1,305 crore (civil cost). The deadline for the first phase of the project is February 2028. 

Mayor Inderjit Kaur stated that the state government led by Chief Minister (CM) Bhagwant Singh Mann is taking up people centric projects across the state. 

Strict safety protocols are enforced. The project’s social and communication unit is actively conducting awareness campaigns, consultations, and outreach activities for the residents. 

Mayor Inderjit Kaur said that fortnightly review meetings would be held to ensure that the project is completed within stipulated time period.
