In a remarkable achievement, Jalnidh Kaur, a turbaned Sikh girl from Punjab, India, was selected as a student speaker for the convocation at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York, USA. Leading the student procession with the Columbia flag, Kaur addressed the gathering. Hailing from Ludhiana, Kaur was awarded a doctoral degree in economics and education. Her groundbreaking research on the role of teacher self-beliefs has been cited by the World Bank and has significantly expanded our understanding of effective interventions to empower teachers. Her dissertation involved a randomized control trial (RCT) conducted across 83 Akal Academies run by the Kalgidhar Trust in Baru Sahib, Himachal Pradesh. Notably, Sant Teja Singh Ji from Baru Sahib also attended Teachers College, Columbia University for a short period in 1905. Kaurs dissertation examines the influence of teachers beliefs on their efforts and student learning in low-income settings. Kaur has been invited to present her research in Glasgow, Tokyo, Norway, and at conferences hosted by the University of Chicago, the University of Oxford, Harvard University, and Stanford University. Before her doctoral studies, Kaur completed an MPhil at Oxford University as a prestigious Rhodes Scholar in 2015. Her husband, Divjot Singh, is a senior manager at Deloitte. The couple has been blessed with the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in their home on the Columbia University campus for over five years. Kaur received her degree accompanied by her three-year-old daughter, Haadra Hadur Kaur.
