### “Shaheed Sukhdev’s birthplace is being neglected because he was a Hindu martyr” — Ashok Thapar
Ludhiana: The Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Memorial Trust observed the birth anniversary of martyr Sukhdev Thapar by organizing a Havan Yagya and expressing gratitude for the supreme sacrifice made by their ancestor during India’s freedom struggle. The statue of the martyr was ceremonially bathed with water collected from five sacred pilgrimage sites.
Under the chanting of Vedic mantras by Pandit Shastri Rohtash Sharma, Swami Adhyatmanand, Mahant Dinesh Puri, Mahant Gaurav Bawa, Swami Yoganand Giri Ji Maharaj, Mahant Vimal Ji, and Shiv Nandi Das Manu Chawla offered the final oblations in the Yagya. ADC Poonam Singh and former Enforcement Directorate Director Dr. Niranjan Singh also paid floral tributes and sought blessings in memory of the martyr.
However, MLAs of the ruling party, who often claim to follow the ideals of Bhagat Singh, along with the Deputy Commissioner and several administrative officials, chose not to attend the birth anniversary function of martyr Sukhdev Thapar.
Reacting to the alleged neglect at the government level, Ashok Thapar, National President of the Trust and Nephew of martyr Sukhdev Thapar, said that successive governments have ignored the martyr’s birthplace because he was a Hindu martyr. He alleged that the present government, like previous administrations, remains busy organizing grand events and spending lakhs of rupees on memorials linked to a particular community, while continuing to ignore Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar.
During the event, hundreds of people signed a petition demanding that Ludhiana Railway Station be renamed after martyr Sukhdev Thapar. The signed documents will be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Tribhuwan Thapar, National President of the Youth Wing of the Trust and Kin of Sukhdev, accused the Archaeological Department of failing to carry out timely repairs at the martyr’s birthplace. He said the Archaeological Department and district administration were shifting responsibility onto each other through official correspondence instead of resolving the issue.
He also thanked various organizations and supporters who contributed to the successful organization of the birth anniversary event and honored them with mementos bearing the image of Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar.
Several political, social, and religious representatives attended the function, including former MLA Surinder Dabar, Senior Deputy Mayor Rakesh Parashar, Councillor Sham Sunder Malhotra, Sunil Mehra, Rajesh Jain Bobby, Kamal Bassi, Pawan Sharma, Yogesh Handa, Vinay Gupta, Ashish Bauni, Pali Sahajpal, Pragat Singh, Sunil Thakur, Advocate R.K.
