Highway Closures Inflicting Severe Losses on Punjab; Our State Can No Longer Bear the Brunt: Tarunpreet Sondh

Highway Blockade Leading to Economic Losses; Open Highways Essential for Jobs and Growth: Tarunpreet Sondh

Chandigarh, March 19

Punjab Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sondh expressed deep concern over the ongoing closure of highways across the state, emphasizing the significant economic, social, and logistical damage it has caused. Speaking on the issue, Sondh highlighted the unwavering support of the Punjab government for farmers while urging a more strategic approach to address their grievances without harming Punjab’s development.

Minister Sondh stated that the closure of Punjab's borders and national highways for over a year has inflicted severe economic damage on the state. He pointed out that these closures have disrupted trade, impacted tourism, and caused significant hardships to commuters, including NRIs and local residents.

Reaffirming the Punjab government’s commitment, Sondh said, “The Aam Aadmi Party government has always stood shoulder to shoulder with farmers in their struggles. Whether it was during the Delhi protests or now, we remain firm in our support for their demands.”

Minister Sondh elaborated on how the closure of highways has resulted in trade stagnation and investment setbacks, isolating Punjab from national connectivity. “Highways are the lifelines of our state. Their closure has brought trade and business activities to a standstill, leading to economic losses and unemployment,” he said.

Sondh also connected the issue of highway closures to the rising unemployment and drug abuse in Punjab. He stressed, “Without industrial investment, there can be no job creation, and without jobs, our youth remain vulnerable to negative influences. Opening the highways is crucial for Punjab’s progress.”

The minister made an emotional appeal to the farmers, urging them to reopen the highways while continuing their fight at the central level. He assured them of the Punjab government’s full support, stating, “Let’s work together to safeguard Punjab’s interests. Closing highways is not the solution. We must unite to address our demands with the central government.”
