On the occasion of World Malaria Day, the Civil Surgeon Office observed the day with a strong message of awareness, prevention, and community participation to eliminate malaria from the region. Civil Surgeon Dr. Ramandeep Kaur said that malaria remains a significant public health concern but is both preventable and treatable with timely action. She highlighted that malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites transmitted through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, which breed in stagnant water, making cleanliness and proper sanitation essential in breaking the cycle of transmission. She further explained that common symptoms include high fever with chills, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and weakness, and if neglected, the disease can lead to severe complications.
Dr. Kaur urged the public to remain vigilant by preventing water stagnation, using mosquito nets and repellents, and seeking immediate medical care upon experiencing symptoms. She reiterated that the Punjab Health Department is providing free testing and treatment at government health facilities and has strengthened surveillance and rapid response mechanisms to ensure early detection and management of cases.
Highlighting the crucial role of field staff, Dr. Kaur appreciated the dedicated efforts of anti-larva teams who are working tirelessly at the grassroots level. She noted that these teams are actively engaged in door-to-door surveillance, identification and elimination of mosquito breeding sites, application of larvicides in stagnant water bodies, and spreading awareness among residents about preventive measures, thereby playing a vital role in controlling mosquito density and preventing outbreaks. On this occasion, Stinder Singh, Sarabjeet Singh (MPHS), Gurpreet Singh, Gurwinder Singh, Sourav Walia, Amanjot Mehra, and other staff members were present and contributed to the successful observance of the day.
Dr. Kaur concluded by stating that community cooperation combined with the relentless efforts of health teams is the key to achieving a malaria-free Punjab, and she called upon every citizen to contribute actively in this fight against malaria.
