*Dairy Owners Directed to Install Water Storage Tanks*

*Cow Dung Being Dumped into Budha Dariya*

Ludhiana, May 18:

Several key and strict decisions were taken during the 37th review meeting on the cleaning of Budha Dariya. It was made clear in the meeting that strict legal action will be taken against dairies that do not install flow meters, extract groundwater indiscriminately, misuse water, or dump cow dung into Budha Dariya.

During the meeting held under the chairmanship of Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain categorically stated that no leniency will be shown towards any individual or institution polluting Budha Dariya.

The Deputy Commissioner also directed officials of the Punjab Pollution Control Board to take action against polluting industries without any delay. Dairy owners were also instructed to install water storage tanks. It was informed in the meeting that in several dairies, motors are run even for small amounts of water, leading to wastage of hundreds of litres.

Sant Seechewal expressed concern that excessive extraction of groundwater could become a major crisis for the future. He said that as per NGT norms, 100 litres of water per animal per day is permitted, but in many dairies, the consumption is reaching up to 500 litres. He further said that cow dung is being washed with clean water and dumped into Budha Dariya, while the same water reaches the people of Malwa and Rajasthan as drinking water through the Sutlej.

During the meeting, officials informed that several dairy owners, whose electricity connections were disconnected for dumping dung, are now using illegal connections to not only steal electricity but also continue misusing water.

It was also revealed that many dairies have livestock far exceeding their capacity, leaving animals with no proper space to sit and forcing them to stand for long hours. In some dairies, injections are being used to increase milk production, which is considered hazardous to human health.

Sant Seechewal added that among rural areas, only Gaunspur village remains, from where untreated wastewater is still flowing into Budha Dariya, and this issue will also be resolved soon.
