Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, April 17, 2024:--

Mohali Administration’s ongoing efforts to rope in the maximum number of voters in its voter awareness campaign bore fruit today when about 400 female voters turned up for the Women’s Marathon to be started from Sports Complex, Sector-78, Mohali.

Divulging the details, the Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Electoral Officer, Mrs Aashika Jain said that the district has an initial target of a minimum of 80 per cent voting in the district. “We have about 7,93,465 voters in total in SAS Nagar district, out of which, males contribute 4,16,704, females 3,77,625 and trans-genders 36”, said DEO by adding that the sizeable voting share of female voters can further be increased by mobilizing them with others too. Today’s event, the Women’s Marathon, was part of the activities scheduled under SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electors’ Participation) to inculcate a sense of responsibility among them with a message conveying to other women too, who were not part of the Marathon, that, they can set a new trend by approaching the polling booths on June 01, 2024, to strengthen the democracy by using their voting rights, added Mrs Jain.

Mohali Municipal Commissioner, Mrs Navjot Kaur along with Joint Commissioner, Mrs Kiran Sharma and SDM Mohali-cum-ARO Ananadpur Sahib, Depankar Garg, flagged off the Marathon, said that the Marathon fetched an overwhelming response from the women voters. She said that like male members of the family, it is duty of female members of the family, too, to vote for the better future of their children as the choice of pressing the button of EVM is with them. If we couldn’t use our right by rushing to the polling booths then we have no right to complain later on, said the Commissioner MC by exhorting the female voters to outnumber the male voters in casting their votes on June 01, 2024. She said that over 3.77 lakh female voters of district SAS Nagar can create history by setting an example for others in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

She said that the female voters from various educational institutions including young and first-timers, from self-help groups and the education department have participated in today’s Marathon to send a strong message to their fraternity to strengthen the democracy by casting their votes zealously. District ICON actress Raj Dhaliwal, State PwD Coordinator Poonam Lal, District Nodal Officer, SVEEP, Prof Gurbakhsish Singh Antal, District Sports Officer Harpinder Singh were also present there. Artist Gurpreet Singh Namdhari portrayed a beautiful and unique painting dedicated to Marathon on Road.

The 100 first winners of the today’s Marathon would be provided with movie tickets in the coming days, said the SDM Depankar Garg. He said that the district SVEEP team led by DC Aashika Jain is proactively sensitizing the voters of all genders to increase voting percentage in the forthcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

The students of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sohana performed folk Dance Gidha by reciting couplets on Festival of Democracy. State Bank of India led by Regional Manager Rohit Kakkar and District Lead Bank Manager M K Bhardwaj arranged refreshments.
