Digital Census 2027 Goes Online: Sanjeev Arora Registers Housing Details, Calls Public Participation Key to Nation Building

Leading by example, Cabinet Minister for Local Government, Industries & Commerce, Investment Promotion and Power Sanjeev Arora registered his housing details under the Digital Census-2027 through self enumeration at his residence in Gurdev Nagar on Saturday.  

Stating that it is the first time that census being conducted digitally, Cabinet Minister Arora appealed to the residents to participate in the exercise in large numbers and register their housing details through self enumeration by visiting onine portal se.census.gov.in .  

Under the first phase of the Digital Census 2027 - Houselisting and Housing Census, the self enumeration commenced in the state on April 30 and it will continue till May 14, 2026. The residents can voluntarily submit housing details (33 questions) online through self enumeration by sitting at their homes.
Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora highlighted that the process is simple, secure, and can be completed from the comfort of one’s home, eliminating the need to wait for an enumerator.

Under this phase, residents are required to provide comprehensive details about their household and family members. These cover key aspects such as the type of house, availability of amenities and other basic facilities—information that plays a crucial role in shaping developmental policies and welfare schemes.

The process involves user registration, OTP verification, filling in the required details, and final submission, after which a unique Self Enumeration ID (SE-ID) is generated. The residents need to submit the SE-ID with the enumerators when they visit their respective properties during field visit. All submitted information will remain strictly confidential and will be used solely for planning and policy-making purposes.

For households unable to complete the process online, an official Enumerator will visit their houses/properties to collect the necessary information during the subsequent field enumeration phase to commence from May 15, 2026.

Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora stated that last Census was held in 2011 and now it is the first time that Census is being held digitally. Appealing the residents to participate in large numbers and to submit accurate information, Cabinet Minister Arora stated that this information helps the government to frame policies and other welfare schemes for the residents.

MC Commissioner-cum-Principal Census Officer Dr Neeru Katyal Gupta, Joint Commissioner-cum-City Census Officer Vineet Kumar, Deputy Director (Census) Punjab Dr Ruchi Gupta, Assistant Director (census operations) Renu, Assistant Commissioner-cum-Charge Officer Jasdev Sekhon, Superintendent Tarun Goyal, Statistical Investigator (census) Alok Kumar among others were present on the occasion.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (G) Poonam Singh on Saturday completed her self-enumeration by submitting details through the official portal se.census.gov.in.


Encouraging residents to take part in the initiative, Singh highlighted that the self-enumeration process allows citizens to conveniently submit their household information online using a mobile number and OTP verification. She described the process as simple, secure, and user-friendly, enabling people to complete it from the comfort of their homes without waiting for an enumerator.

ADC appealed to residents to actively participate and spread awareness about the initiative among their families and communities through social media and local networks. She emphasized that accurate census data is crucial for effective planning in key sectors such as housing, water supply, sanitation, education, healthcare, and employment.

Among those present on the occasion were Deputy Director (Directorate of Census Operations, Punjab, Chandigarh) Dr Ruchi Gupta, Assistant Director Renu, and Statistical Investigator Alok Kumar, along with other officials.

Under this phase, residents are required to provide detailed information about their households and family members, including responses to House Listing Operations (HLO) questions. These cover aspects such as the type of house, availability of amenities, assets, and basic facilities—data that plays a vital role in shaping development policies and welfare schemes.

The process involves user registration, OTP verification, filling in the required details, and final submission. Upon completion, a unique Self-Enumeration ID is generated. Authorities have assured that all information submitted will remain strictly confidential and will be used solely for planning and policy-making purposes.

For households unable to complete the process online, enumerators will visit during the field operation phase to collect the necessary information.
