Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Congress' Lok Sabha candidate for Ludhiana, has been approached by farmers from Punjab who are facing unfair compensation for their land acquired or in the process of being acquired for the construction of the Jammu-Katra national highway. Warring criticized the Modi administration for failing to adhere to the legally mandated compensation rates for land acquisition.
Warring recalled the significant progress made in September 2013 under the leadership of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh when a Progressive bill was introduced to overhaul the Land Acquisition Act of 1894. This legislation was designed to ensure that farmers received fair compensation, increasing the amount by four times for land acquired in rural areas.
He emphasized the key provisions of the 2013 law, which include mandatory consent from farmers before any land acquisition, a clause for retrospective effect, a stipulation for returning unused land to farmers within five years, and the protection of multi-crop land due to its importance for the country’s food security. Despite these robust measures, Warring accused the current government of systematically diluting these protections since 2014. He alleged that compensation has been inadequate and that acquired land often remains unused or is repurposed contrary to the original acquisition terms. Warring placed the blame squarely on the Modi government for weakening the legislation and neglecting its critical clauses.
“The central government under Prime Minister Modi has consistently shown a lack of support for the farmers of Punjab. More than 750 farmers tragically lost their lives during protests against the government's controversial farm laws, and the struggle for fair Minimum Support Prices (MSP) continues. The unjust land acquisitions by this administration are yet another attempt to undermine the economic strength of Punjab. We must stand together against these injustices. I promise to fight for your rights in Parliament and to secure fair compensation for your land. The time for change is now—let's unite to bring about a positive transformation in our governance,” said Warring.
He appealed to the people of Punjab to vote for Congress to save the democracy and the economic well-being of Punjab from the detrimental policies of PM Narendra Modi.
