• Union Minister gives nod, directs NHAI officials to examine feasibility at ground
• Dr. Chabbewal submits detailed proposal for parking lots under Phagwara elevated highway
In a major development aimed at addressing traffic congestion in Phagwara city area, Member Parliament Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal on Wednesday called on Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari urging him for the construction of modern parking lots alongside the elevated highway in the city area.
While meeting the Union Minister, Dr. Chabbewal apprised him that the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) had recently undertaken a similar project for the development of modern parking lots along the elevated in other cities, which provided significant relief to daily commuters and local residents. He stated the initiative had emerged as an effective solution for managing urban congestion, improving traffic flow and creating organized parking infrastructure along busy National Highway corridors.
Reffering to the proposal, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari assured Dr. Chabbewal that NHLML would soon look into the project besides carrying out feasibility study in Phagwara city. Member Parliament apprised the Union Minister that Phagwara, strategically located on the Delhi–Jalandhar National Highway-44, is one of Punjab’s prominent commercial, industrial and educational centers. The city witnesses exceptionally high traffic movement every day, including heavy commercial vehicles, passenger buses, private cars and two-wheelers due to its location on this vital National Highway corridor. He underlined the need of well-planned and organized parking facilities to curb traffic congestion and inconvenience to commuters as well as local.
The MP emphasized that the development of modern parking facilities under the NHLML initiative would not only streamline the traffic movement but also enhance road safety, besides giving a fillip to commercial and economic activities. He expressed hope that the proposed project would provide long-term relief to residents and significantly improve traffic management in Phagwara city.
The Union Minister also instructed the NHAI officials to conduct a field study to check the viability of the project in the city of Phagwara in larger public interest.
