Under the tireless and farsighted leadership of Hon'ble Mr. Justice Surya Kant, Chief Justice of India and Patron-in-Chief, National Legal Services Authority, New Delhi and enlightened vision of Hon'ble Mr. Justice Vikram Nath, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority, New Delhi and under the invaluable guidance of Hon'ble Mr. Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh and Patron-in-Chief, Punjab State Legal Services Authority, SAS Nagar and perennial mentorship of Hon'ble Mr. Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh and Executive Chairman, Punjab State Legal Services Authority, SAS Nagar, a National Lok Adalat was organized on 09.05.2026 at Judicial Courts Complexes in Ludhiana, Jagraon, Samrala, Khanna and Payal under the insightful supervision of Ms. Harpreet Kaur Randhawa, Learned District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairperson, District Legal Services Authority, Ludhiana, in accordance with directions of Punjab State Legal Services Authority, SAS Nagar officiated by Ms. Jagdeep Kaur Virk, Learned Additional District & Sessions Judge, as Member Secretary.
Ms. Harpreet Kaur Randhawa, Learned District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairperson, District Legal Services Authority, Ludhiana informed that with the objective of disposing of all types of pre-litigative and pending civil and compoundable criminal cases through amicable settlement between the parties, a total of 48 benches were constituted at District Headquarters, Ludhiana while a total of 10 benches were constituted at Jagraon, Samrala, Khanna and Payal sub-divisions. Ms. Harpreet Kaur Randhawa informed that more than 1,15,000 cases were taken up during this National Lok Adalat out of which more than 1,10,000 cases were disposed of and awards worth Rs.1997779582 were passed.
Notable among the successes was a more than 12 years old execution titled Piara Singh vs Harbans Kaur which was withdrawn by the decree holder in accordance with compromise entered into between the parties, thereby bestowing upon the decree holder fruits of decree passed as early as the year 2011. Another major success was case titled Vicky Kumar v/s Deepanshu wherein motor accident claim of claimant Vicky Kumar, who had suffered permanent disability and was confined to a wheel chair as a result of a motor vehicle accident, was settled for a sum of Rs.25 Lakhs which respondent ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd. undertook to pay within 45 days by way of cheque issued in name of the claimant.
Ms. Harpreet Kaur Randhawa, Learned District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairperson, District Legal Services Authority, Ludhiana also highlighted various benefits of Lok Adalat, including speedy disposal of cases, awards enjoying the status of decree of a civil court, finality of awards with no appeal permissible under law, settlement through mutual compromise and refund of court fee. She further informed that the next National Lok Adalat will be held on 12.09.2026 and a Special Lok Adalat for cases under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instrument Act is also scheduled to be held on 18.07.2026. Lastly, she informed that people may also contact the Toll-Free Helpline Number 15100 for more information about the said Lok Adalat and other legal services and assistance.
