Zoo’s Summer Rescue Plan: From 100 KG Ice Cubes to Glucon-D to Cucumber, Animals Stay Refreshed
In view of rising temperatures, Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, Chhatbir, has implemented a comprehensive summer diet plan to safeguard the health and comfort of its animals.
Under the guidance of Forest and Wildlife Preservation Minister Mr. Lal Chand Kataruchak, the zoo in order to combat heat stress, is providing 100 kg of Ice Cubes daily to each bear throughout the summer season. Bears, along with monkeys and elephants, are being offered fresh watermelon to ensure hydration and cooling.
Recognizing increased fluid and electrolyte loss in hot weather, Glucon-D powder is being mixed in the drinking water of all carnivorous and omnivorous animals to maintain energy levels and prevent dehydration.
The zoo has also made seasonal adjustments to fruit and vegetable intake. Bananas have been replaced with Papaya, which is easier to digest and has higher water content. For herbivores and birds, Cabbage leaves have been substituted with spinach leaves, and Reddish has been replaced with cucumber, offering better hydration and cooling properties.
These measures are part of Chhatbir Zoo’s regular summer preparedness protocol, monitored closely by veterinarians and animal care staff. The zoo remains committed to ensuring optimal nutrition and welfare for all resident animals during the harsh summer months.
