If Gangsters Are Not Brought Under Control Today, Such Criminals Will Sit in the Assembly Tomorrow, and Honest Officers Will Have to Salute Them: Harmeet Singh Sandhu
Chandigarh, October 27
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu on Tuesday raised the serious issue of gangsterism during the Punjab Legislative Assembly session, highlighting its implications against the future of Punjab and Punjabis. He said that this was not an issue concerning any one party or constituency, but an important matter concerning the entire Punjab and the whole House. He stressed that it was extremely important to discuss the issue seriously and take concrete steps to address it.
Presenting an official document, Harmeet Singh Sandhu explained that it was neither an ordinary piece of paper nor a newspaper clipping, but a Red Corner Notice issued against a serious criminal. This notice pertained to a person who had been involved in bloodshed in Punjab, run a large-scale drug trade and supplied illegal weapons.
MLA Sandhu strongly condemned the Shiromani Akali Dal for giving a ticket to a family with such a criminal background during the Tarn Taran by-election. He said that appointing the wife of a person facing a Red Corner Notice as the Tarn Taran constituency in-charge was equivalent to bringing disrepute to the entire system and was major evidence of political patronage being extended to criminal elements.
Harmeet Singh Sandhu urged the Speaker to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the money used in the elections so that the truth about the ‘drug money’ used during the election could come to light. In addition, he stated that the families of the murdered sarpanches had met him. At the time these murders took place, the present constituency in-charge and her husband were in Dubai, from where the conspiracy behind these murders was hatched. Therefore, he demanded an impartial investigation into this conspiracy as well, either through an SIT or a special officer.
In his statement, MLA Sandhu expressed concern over the prestige of the administrative framework. Cautioning the House, he said that if criminals were not brought under control today, then tomorrow, when such gangsters came and occupied seats in the Legislative Assembly, would honest IPS and IAS officers have to salute them? He emphasised that, for the future of Punjab, it is essential to take strict action against such elements before it is too late.
