Efforts are on to locate a suitable site for the setting-up of New ESIC Medical College in Ludhiana. This will be the first public medical institution in the city, complementing the existing private Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). The ESI Corporation has already approved the establishment of 10 new ESIC medical colleges in the country, the details of which is as under: Ludhiana (Punjab), Andheri (Maharashtra), Basaidarapur (Delhi), Guwahati-Beltola (Assam), Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Jaipur (Rajasthan), Naroda-Bapunagar (Gujarat), Noida, Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) and Ranchi (Jharkhand).
A meeting of concerned government officials including Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal was held under the chairmanship of MP (Rajya Sabha) from Ludhiana Sanjeev Arora in November. Giving more details here today, MP Arora said GLADA has a chunk of land available on Chandigarh Road that could be considered for the new site of the ESIC Hospital. The feasibility of transferring this land to the ESIC Hospital needs to be assessed.
Arora said there is also availability of land belonging to B.L. Kapoor Hospital, Daresi Road, Ludhiana, adding that SDM East has been asked to make the site inspection with the Assistant Director, ESIC and send the inspection report to the Deputy Commissioner at earliest.
MP Arora said another piece of land is also under consideration of the District Administration. This land was acquired by the Punjab Government in early 90s for setting up of ATI (a Central Government Institute) working under Labour and Employment Ministry, Govt. of India. The state government had acquired this land in the name of Punjab Technical Education and Industrial Training Department. A parcel of land lying vacant on the main GT Road, Doraha, is strategically located and could be considered for establishing a new ESIC Medical College and Hospital. This would enable the optimal utilisation of this prime location. A team from ESIC Hospital, Ludhiana, under the supervision of the Assistant Director, visited the site. Upon review, it was observed that both ATI and ESIC operate under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, ensuring no issues regarding ownership or administrative changes.
Assistant Director, ESIC Hospital, Ludhiana, has already been advised to assess the feasibility of all the identified lands. He has also been instructed to submit the norms with respect to distance from the city for establishing a new ESIC College.
According to MP Arora, ESIC originally requested 20 acres, the state government will initially provide a 10-acre site, with additional land allocated as needed. It is strongly believed that the establishment of a new medical college in the city will be a great achievement not only for Ludhiana people but also for the whole of the state.
