Professor (Dr.) Gursharn Jit Singh Sandhu assumed charge as Principal of SCD Government College, Ludhiana on April 4, 2025, marking the beginning of a promising chapter in the legacy of one of Punjab’s most prestigious educational institutions.
An accomplished scholar and a proud alumnus of SCD Government College, Dr. Sandhu completed his M.Sc. in Mathematics from the college during 1986–88. His academic journey continued with an M.Phil. from Panjab University, Chandigarh, followed by a Ph.D. from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.
Principal Sandhu began his teaching career in 1995 at Government College for Girls, Ludhiana, and joined the faculty of SCD Government College in 1998. He was promoted to the position of Professor in 2012. With a distinguished teaching career spanning 34 years, he has also served at institutions such as Panjab University Campus, Chandigarh, and Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana.
In the field of research, Dr. Sandhu has an impressive record, having published 25 research papers in renowned national and international journals across the USA, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Russia, Poland, Yugoslavia, and Romania. He has presented his research at international prestigious forums. A prolific author, Dr. Sandhu has written over 60 books. His academic achievements earned international recognition when his biography was included in the 2009 edition of Who’s Who in the World, published in the USA.
Dr. Sandhu has actively contributed to academic governance. He has been a member of the Academic Council at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali, and has served four terms as a member of the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Arts at Panjab University, Chandigarh. He currently serves on both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Boards of Studies in Mathematics at Panjab University. Additionally, he has been associated with the Boards of Studies in Mathematics at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana, and Khalsa College, Amritsar.
He is also the Technical Editor of the Journal of Applied Sciences and the Asian Journal of Applied Sciences, both based in the USA. His commitment to public education is evident through his advisory role for the Punjab Government’s Meritorious Schools and as a Resource Person for the state’s EDUSAT program aimed at promoting higher education through satellite-based teaching.
Dr. Sandhu was warmly welcomed by the college community, including staff and students, who expressed great enthusiasm and respect for his appointment. In his address, he emphasized the values of academic integrity, collaborative learning, and inclusive growth. As a scholar, teacher, and administrator with deep roots in the college, Professor (Dr.) Gursharn Jit Singh Sandhu is well-positioned to lead SCD Government College, Ludhiana into a new era of excellence.
