In a remarkable tale of transformation, Sukhpal Singh, a fish farmer from Bahadar Khera village in Fazilka district, Punjab, has been felicitated by the Union Minister of Fisheries on the 4th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) in Delhi on September 11.
Sukhpal Singh's journey from a debt-ridden farmer to a successful entrepreneur is an inspiration to many. With the guidance and support of the Fisheries Department, he transitioned from traditional farming to aquaculture in 2013. Starting with 2.5 acres, he expanded to 10 acres in 2014 and later to 20 acres, adopting shrimp culture.
Through technical training sessions and subsidies provided by the Fisheries Department, Sukhpal Singh enhanced his knowledge and skills. His perseverance paid off, earning him a profit of Rs. 2.0 lakhs per acre per annum.
Sukhpal Singh's success has motivated other farmers in Fazilka, transforming the district into one of Punjab's top shrimp farming hubs. His achievement demonstrates the potential of fisheries as a viable business option, improving economic and social status.
The Fisheries Department's initiatives have empowered farmers like Sukhpal Singh to overcome challenges posed by saline-affected infertile lands and debt. Today, they contribute to the nation's growth, paying income tax and inspiring others.
Sukhpal Singh said, "I am grateful to the Fisheries Department for their guidance and support. Adopting shrimp culture has changed my life, and I hope my story encourages others to explore this lucrative opportunity."
Deputy Director Kewal Krishan while congratulating him said that fisheries Department is providing subsidies and all other assistance to farmers who are adopting fish farming.
