Ludhiana Ngo Meet Health Minister Punjab Dr Balbir Singh Over Drugs Issue

Mar20,2023 | Gautam Jalandhari | Patiala

The team of Dr.Dwarakanath Kotnis Health and Education Center, Ludhiana including Sardar Iqbal Singh Gill (IPS RETD.),  Dr. Inderjit Singh Dhingra (Director)  andMr.Jaswant Singh Chappa (Member)  met with Dr.Balbir Singh ( Health Minister,  Punjab)  at his residence in Patiala. The team thanked the minister as the government of Punjab has decided to discuss the issue of drug abuse and measures to make Punjab drug free on 22nd March in the assembly . The team members presented a letter to the minister suggesting the measures to solve the problem of synthetic drugs abuse in the state and requested him to suggest them in the assembly. Amendment in the NDPS act and opening of drug de addiction centres in Punjab was suggested by the institution to the government of the state. Dr.Inderjit highlighted the side effects of synthetic drugs such as mental illness,  physical weakness and which ultimately leads to increase in criminal cases putting a burden on the administration. A positive solution to this can be if the government open centres for the distribution of traditional drugs such as opium and poppy which have less side effects and minimum addiction and after that counselling sessions can help to overcome this problem.

Traditional therapies like acupuncture, yoga and ayurveda can cure the patients completely. Modern medicine has the treatment but addiction cannot be controlled with the modern medicines.

Dr.Inderjit Singh informed that 500 drug de addiction centres run by central government do not require a psychiatrist because drug addiction is a social evil and not a mental issue. But in 2011 Punjab government has made it mandatory to have a psychiatrist in drug de addiction centres because of which many centres in Punjab have been shut down and there is no such centre for the treatment of drug addicts.

The minister promised the institution that the government will discuss and take a strong decision on this in the upcoming session .

This meeting was very fruitful as there is hope that the government will surely take some good decision for the welfare of the people.

The MLA of ludhianaChaudharyMadanlalbagga , Ashok PrasharPappi,  Daljit Singh bhola,  Smt. RajinderpalKaurCheena will support the institution in this movement to make Punjab drug free
